Rick asked

I am on pain management. On my last urinalysis there was methadone found in my system..I have never taken methadone My son is on methadone and I put two methadone pills in a bottle with my Mobic so I would have it for him when he goes to his doctor and has it in his system. Is it possible for the methadone to transfer to the Mobic. I had taken Mobic and aspirin the day before I went to doctor. They were unable to tell me the level of methadone in system. I have to take another ua on Monday and afraid to take the Mobic. It has been in the same bottle for two weeks. Also, Is there a way I can have the Mobic tested to see if it is contaminated?

Answer

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It's certainly frustrating when something like this happens. There could be multiple reasons for the drug test result you received. There is certainly a chance of a false positive, or like you mentioned, some of your sons methadone contaminating your Mobic.

First off, it's important to know that taking Mobic CANNOT result in a positive test for Methadone. They are in two distinct different classes of medications and taking one would not cause a positive test for the other. So, you do NOT have to worry about Mobic causing a positive methadone test alone.

Methadone you may have noticed, can be somewhat chalky. There is a very high possibility that some of the methadone was transferred over to the Mobic and contaminated it. Elimination of methadone varies widely from person to person. In some people, the drug can be completely cleared from the body in 2-3 days. In other people, it can take WEEKS to completely eliminate the drug from the body. As you mentioned in your question, if you are taking a test on Monday, I would certainly not recommend taking the Mobic that was possibly contaminated with the methadone.

There is a very real chance you may get another positive test. If possible, try to get a new prescription from your pharmacy or doctor for Mobic. That way you know there is no chance of contamination. Although you could have your Mobic tested in a laboratory to see if it has any methadone residue on it, it probably would be quite expensive. Only specialized places would be able to do it as well. There unfortunately is no easy way to identify how much methadone might be on those tablets. It isn't as easy as bringing it to a pharmacy to find out. Your best option in my opinion is to get some fresh tablets. Cash price at most pharmacies would be less than $20 for a 30 day supply so it's fairly inexpensive.
