SkiMom asked

I’ve been on 150 mg of Wellbutrin for years and recently prescribed 10mg of adderall twice a day. I also am on 50ng Zoloft which I was taking in the morning with the Wellbutrin but was thinking of switching to night. Please advise the best way to take these medications to get the most benefit. Thanks, SkiMom

Answer

Medication TimeIn terms of the best day of day to take Zoloft (sertraline), Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Adderall (mixed amphetamine salts), we will describe the recommended administration times for each below.

Best Time To Take Zoloft

Zoloft (sertraline) can be taken in the morning or evening according to the prescribing information for the drug. In the clinical trials used to assess Zoloft efficacy for treating depression, both morning and evening dosing schedules were used, with no difference in effect. In addition, Zoloft may be taken without regard to meals but if it causes nausea, food may help reduce this effect.

Best Time To Take Wellbutrin

Wellbutrin (bupropion) should be taken in the morning according to the prescribing information. In some individuals, Wellbutrin can cause insomnia (trouble falling asleep). To avoid or limit the risk of insomnia, Wellbutrin should not be taken in the evening or at night time.

Best Time To Take Adderall

Adderall should always been taken in the morning (or early afternoon if dosing multiple times per day). Adderall is a stimulant medication that will almost certainly cause insomnia if taken too close to bedtime.

Drug Interactions Between Zoloft, Adderall and Wellbutrin

It should be noted that there are some potential interactions between these three medications, but administration time will not lessen the risk. After continuous dosing of all three, they will eventually reach steady-state concentrations so varying administration time of each will have little effect.

Potential interactions include:

  • Adderall and Zoloft both increase serotonin levels, increasing the risk for additive serotonin-related side effects.
  • There is an increased seizure risk in those taking Wellbutrin and Adderall, especially if you have a history or are susceptible to them.
  • Wellbutrin may inhibit Zoloft metabolism, increasing concentrations.

The above interactions are important to be aware of, but do not preclude the use of all three medications together. Be sure that all of your doctors have your complete medication list so you can be monitored appropriately.
