What Are The Side Effects Of Flonase Nasal Spray?

Nasal Spray Title

Overview

Flonase (Fluticasone) is one of the most popular steroid nasal sprays on the market today. Originally available only by prescription, it is now available over the counter (OTC) as two different formulations, Flonase and Flonase Sensimist. In this article, we discuss the potential side effects of Flonase.

In general, Flonase (Fluticasone) nasal spray is very well tolerated for the majority of people that use it. It belongs to a class of medications known as intranasal steroids. Intranasal corticosteroids are very often the most effective treatment for the nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Most medical guidelines place intranasal steroids as a first line option for treating allergy symptoms. Intranasal steroids often provide significant relief, whether or not they are used once and awhile or continuously.
As with any medication though, there is always the possibility of unwatnted adverse reactions or side effects. We will list the potential side effects below in three categories: Common, Uncommon, Rare.

Common  Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Inflammation of the back of the throat (Pharyngitis)
  • Bleeding from the nose

Uncommon Side Effects

  • Coughing
  • Nasal irritation
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Runny nose
  • Asthma symptoms

Rare Or Unknown Incidence

  • Growth inhibition (data from a 1-year clinical growth study in children showed a lower average growth velocity in those using the 110mcg spray compared with placebo, -0.27 cm/year. The long-term effects of this reduction in growth velocity, including the impact on final adult height, are unknown)
  • Infection
  • Sneezing
  • Altered perception of taste/smell

As with all drugs, there is a long list of reported and potential side effects and it certainly is good to at least be aware of everything that has been reported. In general however, Flonase (Fluticasone) nasal spray is very well tolerated and a good option for allergic rhinitis and other allergy related symptoms.

It's a good idea to remember that onset of action for intranasal steroids is about 7 hours after the first dose, but very often takes several days of use to reach full effectiveness.
